Position Responsibilities Internal Posting? Position Summary The person in this position will carry out post harvest research on the biology and control of postharvest pathogens of potato (including Helmintosporium solani, Colletotrichum coccodes, and Pectobacterium carotovorum) using molecular techniques such as real-time PCR. The incumbent will be responsible for postharvest storage trials for the control of diseases caused by these pathogens using volatile compounds. Responsibilities include designing experimental procedures, field work and sample collection, molecular characterization, data analysis and preparation of manuscripts for publication. Must have a strong background in biology and control of fungal plant pathogens. Familiarity with gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is also desirable. The scientist will be under the direction of UI faculty and will be expected to work in collaboration with other scientists, scientific aides, research staff, and graduate student(s) in the program. Responsibilities Job Duty Function Research: Job Duties/Responsibilities Working with the PI and Scientific Aides to refine experimental objectives, research plan, and experimental designs. Refining methods of the molecular detection of potato pathogens from soil and tissue samples. Conducting independent, collaborative, and/or supervised research to develop diagnostic PCR primers to identify fungal pathogens. Utilize molecular tools to quantify pathogen levels in volatile storage trials to determine the efficacy of volatile products for the control of postharvest pathogens. Job Duty Function Presentation of Research Results: Job Duties/Responsibilities Preparing data for presentation and publication; presenting results at scientific meetings and assisting with efforts to procure additional funding. Job Duty Function Supervision: Job Duties/Responsibilities Supervision of irregular help, scientific aides, and graduate students as needed for the completion of project goals. Job Duty Function Other Support: Job Duties/Responsibilities Attending unit laboratory meetings. Maintaining a safe and orderly research laboratory environment. Position Qualifications Minimum Qualifications *Education: Ph.D. degree (or an equivalent degree with experience) in molecular biology, plant pathology, postharvest physiology or closely related field with emphasis in the utilization of molecular techniques for identification and genetic analysis of fungal plant pathogens. *Research Experience: Experience/familiarity with plant fungal pathogens including Colletotrichum species, bioinformatics and utilization of BLAST within the NCBI database. Familiarity with molecular techniques, such as primer development, PCR, DNA sequencing, etc. Familiarity with GC-MS and methodologies for measuring volatile compounds. *Demonstrated oral and written communication skills. *Demonstrated ability to work independently and with a group. *Other: Ability to pass a background check [if required]. Preferred Qualifications *Experience in working with hazardous (lab) materials, experience in use, storage and disposal of biological hazardous materials, and the utilization safe lab practices.
